About the event
We here at the Texas Intensive believe that Black Lives Matter. We believe that Black Artists Matter.
We are taking a number of steps combat the systemic racism in the small ways that we can. This will start with our 2020 Texas Intensive, a one-day virtual workshop and fundraiser to support Black artists and Black Lives in our immediate community.
The money we will work to raise with this one-off event will be for two organizations: Street Forge Armory and Black Lives Matter Houston. Fundraising for the local chapter of BLM was always an idea we had, because we believe in it’s mission and want to support it in any way we can. And in addition to supporting that national movement, we also wanted to support artists of color in our own community.
Da’Mon Stith, Historical African martial artist and president of the Historical African Martial Arts Association, has been a staple at the TXI for over 5 years. Students have loved training with him and his associates, Jeffrey Johnson and Brian Fisher, and have purchased many training weapons from them. To support them, their business, and to continue to build our relationship, the TXI will be purchasing a class set of swords from Street Forge Armory. With a full set of training blades, we hope to feature the work of Da’Mon and HAMA at our 2021 workshop.
For this year, on Saturday, September 5th, when we would usually open the TXI, we will hold a day of virtual classes and work to raise money for the set of swords as well as Black Lives Matter Houston. All proceeds will be split 50/50 between these two organizations. And because this is a fundraiser and not our typical workshop we asking you to pay-what-you-can to help support these two organizations.
